Charities

EBCycling supports communities and causes through charitable giving and volunteering.  We believe it’s important to give back to not only the community we live in, but also impoverished communities in other countries.  EBCycling supports impoverished rural communities, kids, challenged athletes and cancer research through the following nonprofit organizations:

Bicycles Against Poverty

Bicycles Against Poverty distributes bicycles to rural African communities improving their standard of living by saving lives in times of need and also providing access to markets for trade allowing people to earn an income; they provide transportation to medical services, school and clean water sources. Bicycles provide freedom, empowerment, and opportunity to Africans living in rural communities.  Click for more information about Bicycles Against Poverty.

Bikes 4 Kids Project

The Bikes 4 Kids Project has given out almost 400 bikes and helmets in the last three years to one boy and one girl in each grade (1st through 12th) at 13 National City schools.  National City has a large number of kids that live in low-income households, where bikes are not an option after buying food and paying rent.  The bikes are awarded based on certain criteria: good grades and attendance as well as good behavior with classmates, teachers and staff.  Giving a bike to one boy and one girl in each grade creates an unforgettable experience and helps them realize what hard work and good behavior can bring.  Classmates are also inspired to do their best.  Click here for more information about their organization.

Challenged Athletes Foundation

The Challenged Athletes Foundation provides physically challenged individuals with opportunities and support to live active lifestyles through physical activity and competitive sports, resulting in greater self-confidence, independence and quality of life.  CAF is a leader in the campaign to accept and respect physically challenged athletes just the same as able-bodied athletes.  For more information about Challenged Athletes Foundation check out their website.

Padres Pedal the Cause

Padres Pedal the Cause is one of San Diego’s leading nonprofit organizations.  They were formed to organize and promote an annual two-day cycling fundraiser in partnership with the San Diego Padres to raise money for cancer research.  The money raised in San Diego goes to local cancer research.  Over the past 5 years Pedal the Cause has raised more than $7.1 million dollars for cancer research in San Diego and has funded 31 collaborative research projects for their beneficiaries:

  • Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health
  • Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
  • The Salk Institute for Biological Studies
  • Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego

Velo Youth

San Diego Velo Youth is a values-based program for disadvantaged kids centered on goal-setting, cycling and achievement, helping at-risk teens improve their self-confidence and overcome their circumstances, while providing 18 hours of cycling coaching.  The kids come from schools where 75% of the students receive a free or reduced-price lunch, neighborhoods with frequent gang activity and they often have emotional or developmental disabilities–some are homeless.  Velo Youth provides these kids with cycling coaching from mentors who also help them make safe and healthy choices.  The program also offers opportunities to earn their own bike through community service and mentoring peers.  Donations are used to purchase helmets, bicycles and gear.  For more information visit:  http://veloyouth.org/
